www.forestryimages.org | | This description of ecological forest management of oak-hickory relies in large part on the work of the Pioneer Forest. The Pioneer forest has a detailed description of its basic management approach, the single tree selection system, the economics of ecological forestry in the ozarks, and biological benefits. The Ozark mountains shelter a diverse array of plants and animals. Important tree species include white oak (Quercus alba), red oak (Q. rubra), black oak (Q. velutina), bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis), and shagbark hickory (C. ovata) while the understory is often composed of dogwood (Cornus florida), sassafras (Sassafras albidum), and hop hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). The shrub layer is distinct, often with evergreens, and wildflowers are common. Wetter sites are dominated by American elm (Ulmus americana), tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera), and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) (from WWF Ecoregions).
